Detect dropped network packets on your linux system

One quick way to determine if there is dropped network packets, is to leverage some existing functionality as follows:

[root@twg ~]#ifconfig

The results will look similar to the following:

… .
RX packets:1412698990 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:1359234825 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
… .

Obviously noting that if dropped packets were to occur, the “dropped” value would be greater than zero. This is a general indicator of network congestion.

[root@twg ~]# cat /proc/net/dev

This will output network device related information and under the “drop” column you will see a similar indication as per the ifconfig command.
